Advantages of Self Publishing

There are several advantages related to self publishing a book. This article will go over the four most important ones.

The four most important advantages of self publishing are vital to understand. Let's get to them.

1. More money for you – Self publishing will allow you to retain a much larger portion of the sales of your book. Publishing houses will often charge you dearly as they are essentially commission houses that make money when your book sells. Also, self publishing will allow you to have control over the price of the book. A publishing house on the other hand will regulate the price of your book to suit their business model, which might not always be to your liking.

2. Control over the editing process – Even if a publishing house likes your work, there is a very good chance that they will make significant changes to some of your work. They will also alter the design of the covers and may restrict other media such as e-books and CD’s. Self publishing will not impose such restrictions and you are free to have complete control over the design and editing of your book.

3. Time schedule – A publishing house might take its own sweet time to publish your book or promote it. Publishing houses often have thousands of writers waiting for their work to be reviewed which mean that your potential best seller will spend months just waiting in the pipeline. Self publishing will however allow you to control the timing of your release. This is particularly useful for books that might be related to a certain timeline. For example, you might have a great Christmas book which you can release this Christmas with self publishing. With a publishing house, you might be lucky if your book is ready to sell by next Christmas. Go for self publishing if you want more control over the timeline of your book release.

4. No contractual obligations – When a publishing house takes on your book with a contract, you are often at the mercy of their contract which will cover several years. During this time, you will have limited choices when it comes to making any radical changes to your book. For example, your book sales might not have taken off like you planned and you might want to experiment with an e-book which the publishing house might not allow. Self publishing will however allow that.

As you can see, there are some significant advantages of self publishing although one should understand that one would have to spend an enormous amount of time, money and effort to make self publishing work as publishing is quite an arduous task.
